Know Your Story Week 2 Devotional

Getting Starting:

Find a comfortable place where you can write and draw. Consider using crayons, colored pencils, or pens. Set aside approximately an hour to complete the entire devotional.

Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths, begin to calm your heart and mind. Say a prayer inviting the Spirit to be a part of this journey with you.

Exercise 1: Draw The Tree of Your Life(Approximately 5 – 10 Minutes)

Draw, write, or visualize the Tree of Your Life. What does it look like? The trunk, roots, what nourishes your tree? Are there dead leaves? Branches that have pruned to allow future growth? What kind of tree is it? After completing share with your partner.

Exercise 2: How’s Your Soul (Approximately 5-10 Minutes)

Given the tree you just drew, what does the weather look like around your tree today? Draw, describe, or write how the weather is affecting your tree today.

Spiritual Autobiography Prompt – Rebellion (approximately 45 minutes)

Dan Wakefield, the author of “The Story of Your Life – Writing a Spiritual Autobiography” writes that “Rebellion is a natural part of adolescence, just as it is a normal part of faith, not an aberration.” Our topic for this entry revolves around rebellion and our adolescence. Rebellion does not have any “normal” pattern, it is unique to each of us, and in this lesson you are encouraged to explore what it meant to you to spiritually rebel.

Prompt for Week 2

Set aside at least 45 minutes and with determination to write and the expectation of sharing, complete one of the following sentences:

  • I know exactly which adolescent spiritual experience I would like to write about and here it is…
  • Rebellion is a natural part of faith development, I remember when…
  • I remember when I first had to take a stand for something…
  • I remember what it was like in high school to…
